Best of Commuting

Western Suburbs, Chicago: Every so often, a television show will drop in a "best of" episode where they pull from selected vignettes from the past season. To wit, I offer my collection of train sketches over the past few months of 2013. There never seems to be a shortage of subjects from which to choose. You will notice that I have several different speeds at which I capture the people, depending on how long my commute is and whether or not the people have spotted me looking at them or not. Obviously the ones who are sleeping are the easiest to do. Public transportation always gives me the best range of people sketching in an urban environment.

Where have you found your best urban sketching subject matter?

  3. Hi there! great stuff here, I'm glad that I drop by your page and found this very interesting. Thanks for sharing about Hoping to read something like this in the future! Keep it up!
You’ll find magic in such sparkling Chicago attractions as Navy Pier – the Midwest’s top tourist destination – and its boardwalk, 150-foot Ferris wheel, boat and segway tours, and countless dining or shopping options. Millennium Park offers dazzling music, art, landscape design and architecture – including the mammoth stainless-steel Cloud Gate sculpture – plus ice skating in the winter, splashing around in the interactive Crown Fountain during summer, and alfresco dining from spring to fall. Travel to the city of Chicago by train. with Amtrak Vacations and see what you've been missing.

  4. Nice pictures, but none of the commuters seem very happy… That’s why I prefer to ride my bike to work!

  5. Thanks Kaieza. I expect to visit most of the locations you mentioned through my involvement with Urban Sketchers Chicago, especially if it gets warmer soon. Sometimes I find the most compelling scenes to capture are the off-beat locations too, like the doctor waiting room or a construction crew. They look less posed and less familiar too.

  6. Brad, thank you for your comments. You are spot on that no one seems very happy...or very awake for that matter. I find that if I capture this sadness, it makes me wonder what is causing so much stress in their life. On more rare occasions, I can cheer people up after they see what I have been sketching and I feel it makes us both feel better about ourselves. Thanks for checking in Brad.
