Sketch & Post!

    Let's Sketch Chicago

LIBRARIES!

Sunday, March 20

12 PM –  3 PM

Hosted by Evelyn Brody and Urban Sketchers Chicago

This month we will once again sketch asynchronously, with the hope that we will resume in-person meetups before too long!

Details:

Our March theme is libraries—from your home bookcase to those mini-birdhouse exchanges (a favorite subject of our members!) to civic institutions modest or grand. With the weather warming up, an exterior scene might appeal to you. If it’s raining or nighttime when you’re moved to sketch, let’s see a cozy scene of your housemate lost in a good book.
We follow USk Global’s guidelines of sketching live on location and not from reference photos. When outside your home, adhere to any government and private guidelines on social distancing and masking to help everyone stay safe. All skill levels welcome – happy sketching!

We gather for our virtual throwdown on our group Facebook page on Sunday, March 20, between noon and 3pm, but we always welcome late entries.

And do tag your posts with #uskchicago so we may share your work on our group Instagram account.

In the meantime, Happy Daylight Savings Time!

Thank you, Namrita Malik, for the banner image sketch of the Hinsdale Library!

Let's Sketch Chicago

 Garfield Park Conservatory

SUNDAY, December 19, 2021

11:45 AM –  1:30 PM

Hosted by Rachel Pasch Grossman and Urban Sketchers Chicago

For our second hybrid sketch meet, we’ll be sketching at the Garfield Park Conservatory.

You can join us on Sunday, December 19, at the Conservatory, or you can sketch there on your own, any time before that. Whichever you choose, we hope you’ll join our virtual throwdown on December 19, from 12 noon on.

The Garfield Park Conservatory is one of the largest and most stunning conservatories in the world, warm and revitalizing on a cold winter day.

  • December 19th, we’ll meet at the front entrance at 11:45 a.m.
  • We must enter as a group.
  • Due to covid, the Conservatory is limiting how long groups can stay, so we’ll be having our in-person throwdown there at 1:30.

Reservations provide a one-time entry for a 90 minute visit to the gardens. There is no re-entry if you exit the gardens.

Restrooms will be open and are located at the front entrance, in the lobby. We encourage you to plan your visit accordingly and use the restroom before or after your visit through the gardens.  Water fountains will not be available during your visit.

The Conservatory is located at 300 N. Central Park Avenue, just north of Lake Street. There is a large free parking lot on the south side of the Conservatory, and there is a Green Line stop right there, the Conservatory-Central Park Drive stop.

Note: If you want to go on your own, the Conservatory is requiring reservations, which are easy to get from the website, garfieldconservatory.org.

If the Garfield Park Conservatory is inconvenient, you could sketch at

(Plug from a local: the charming Oak Park Conservatory is a gem, with three well-established rooms, a small koi pond, and a couple of showy parrots. On-street parking and free admission too, located right off the Eisenhower.)

Our virtual throwdown will take place on Sunday Dec. 19 starting at 12 noon on our FB group. Share your sketches from this month and see what fellow members have created. To make your post easy to find, use the tag #uskchicago.

Winter in Chicago!

Sketch by Barbara Weeks

Can you believe the winter months and indoor sketching are nearly here?!

We are planning a new indoor sketching format so we can be considerate of our members’ health and tolerance levels.

Here’s what it will look like:

  • Winter indoor sketching months are November - March
  • A FB event with a meetup location will be posted around the 1st of the month
  • Sketchers can either sketch at the announced location any time until 3rd Sunday or gather at the location on a 3rd Sunday at 12 noon to sketch
  • Throwdown will be virtual on our FB group on the 3rd Sunday of the month
  • Share your sketches and photos at a virtual throwdown on FB on the 3rd Sunday

There will be no host for these gatherings, please take photos and share them!

If you want to sketch a similar location, you can participate with this sketch as well. If you want to share a different location sketch - please do!

Happy Sketching!

Atlas Stationers

Saturday, August 21

12 PM - 3 PM

Hosted by

Save the date! Atlas Stationers is hosting Urban Sketchers Chicago on Aug 21st ,with  special hours for our group. This 4th generation business has the largest selection of fountain pens, inks and journals/ sketchbooks. If you have ever wanted to try out fountain pens and ink then this is your chance. They have an ink testing station and will also ink up any pen you would like to try. They are knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful.

Details

Atlas is located at 227 W Lake near the corner of Wells.

Our fearless leader, Alex Zonis will be doing a demo showing the basics of how to tune your pen nibs to get a smoother line.
There are also incredible views to sketch. The Riverwalk is 3 blocks walkaway, the view looking down Franklin st to the west is an iconic downtown skyline perspective and they are under one of the 4 track curves for the CTA Loop. Atlas will be offering the use of their restroom to our group.

There is a parking garage right at 205 N Post Place that does not break the bank. The the CTA and bus stops are just steps away from the location.

Show and Tell

Let's Sketch

Show and Tell

Sunday, May 30

12 PM - 3 PM

Hosted by

As we continue to sketch virtually and get closer to gathering together, let’s take the opportunity to share new tools or techniques you’ve learned over the past year.

  • Maybe you bought a new pen, pencil, or brush
  • Maybe you’ve been trying out a new paint, gouache, or ink
  • Maybe you found the perfect paper or sketchbook
  • Maybe you practiced a particular technique, or reinforced an existing one
We’d love to see how you used them and learn together.

Details:

Share your on location sketch, displaying your new tools and/or technique in your sketch photo or additional photo. Please provide a description and your findings, whether it worked out or not. We may not be able to all sketch together just yet, but we can still learn from each other!

Don’t forget to hashtag sponsors!

Remember that we are following USk Global’s guidelines of sketching live on location and not from reference photos. All skill levels welcome – happy sketching!

As usual, we will post from noon to 3 p.m. to share and discuss, but late submissions are always welcome.
Please include #uskchicago and #uskathome on your posts to Facebook and Instagram.
